Mikke comes from the Japanese みっけ (mikke) — the word a child calls out at the winning moment of hide-and-seek: found you! It's not the word for searching; it's the word for the instant the searching pays off. That's what a good walk with a dog is made of — a string of small findings — and it's exactly what the app does: the good walks are already out there, hidden in plain sight, and Mikke helps you find them.
Most maps treat a walk as a line between two points. Dogs don't. A good walk is a string of small decisions, where to sniff, where there's water, where dogs are welcome, where the pavement gets loud. Owners rebuild that knowledge from scratch every time they leave their own street, and lose it completely in a new city.
Mikke serves pre-built, cached walking routes; it never generates a route on the fly, so a walk is ready before you are, even offline. Each route carries mapped sniff stops, dog-friendly points of interest (cafés, pubs, vets, landmarks), turn-by-turn GPS follow, and a gentle “stray alert” that nudges you back if you drift off the trail. Free walkers build and rate the map; Mikke Pass (£2/month or £14.99/year, coming soon) lets you travel with it, offline downloads, filters, dog-friendly corridors and live safety alerts.
Two things. First, a community-verification ladder: every route climbs from community built to community walked to locally verified, and Mikke is honest when something “isn't tagged yet” rather than faking completeness. Second, it treats the walk as a memory, not just a metric, you can save snaps and notes to the routes you love, so a life with your dog is recorded, not forgotten.
Mikke is a tribute to Woody, a dachshund who spent sixteen years walking across Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, the Netherlands, Malta, Italy and the UK, from snow in a Tallinn winter to the blue sea off Malta to sniffing around Tower Bridge like a local.
